About the farmer
This coffee originates from the Karimikui Factory, which is operated by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society in the Ngairiama region of Kirinyaga District, located in the Central Province of Kenya. Established in 1953, the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society comprises approximately 3,500 smallholder farmers. These producers typically manage plots of about one hectare in size, where they cultivate coffee alongside other fruit and vegetable crops.
During the harvest season, farmers meticulously handpick the ripest coffee cherries, delivering them to the mill on the same day of harvest. At the mill, the cherries undergo a rigorous sorting process by hand, with damaged and under-ripe cherries carefully separated from the fully ripe ones. The cherries are then pulped, fermented, washed, and sun-dried at the factory before undergoing grading in preparation for the weekly auctions in Nairobi.
Blessed with consistent rainfall, the coffee-growing conditions in this region are among the best in the world. Consequently, this coffee embodies the esteemed qualities associated with Kenyan coffee – remarkable acidity, deep fruity notes, and a lusciously syrupy texture.
